D-Day landing – picture of the day

A photographic highlight selected by the picture desk. The Normandy landings, codenamed Operation Overlord, took place on 6 June 1944. Juno Beach was one of the five designated beaches for landing and was attacked by units of the Canadian 3rd Infantry Division. They took heavy casualties in the first wave but, by the end of the day, were successful in taking control of the area from German troops
