The Tom Thumb – picture of the day

A photographic highlight selected by the picture desk. The Baltimore Railroad, America’s first common carrier, was launched on 28 February 1827. Passengers rode in horse-drawn carriages until the Tom Thumb locomotive was built in 1830. This photograph shows a trial run with company directors during which it reached speeds varying from five to 18 miles an hour
