In 1936, writer James Agee and photographer Walker Evans were commissioned by Fortune magazine to document the lives of sharecroppers in the American South. The collaboration ultimately resulted in a book ‘Let Us Now Praise Famous Men’, which has been widely regarded as a masterpiece, one of the most influential books of the twentieth century. In the book, there are several portraits of the Burroughs family by Walker Evans. James Agee died on this day in 1955
