Photographer Herman Leonard said that when he poked his camera through the curtain backstage he was happily surprised to find Ellington ‘bathed in celestial light’. When he shot this picture, Ellington heard the click of the camera and gave Leonard a wink. Herman Leonard was an internationally acclaimed photographer of the jazz scene. He was born on this day in 1923, he died in 2010
