A photographic highlight selected by the picture desk. On 25 April 1898, the Spanish-American war began. This stereoscopic image from the war is titled ‘Troop A, Ninth US Cavalry – Famous Indian fighters’. Stereoscopic images were introduced to the public by Sir David Brewster at the Crystal Palace exhibition of 1850 and by the 1890s the production of the images was fully industrialised. Individual stereoscopic cards could be bought from local booksellers or stereo emporiums
